Christmas and New Year in Kinnaur: A Winter Trip Guide

Kalpa village houses and temple, Kinnaur

Kinnaur in late December is quiet, cold and beautiful, but not easy.

Snow. Heavy snow in December has closed link roads and affected power supply in parts of Kalpa and Pooh in past winters. Higher villages like Chitkul are the first to be affected.

Choose your base
- Kalpa: views of the Kinner Kailash range and a sense of being above the valley.
- Sangla: a river valley, with the road to Chitkul continuing beyond.
- Narkanda or Sarahan: easier on the way in or out.

Plan
1. Book heated stays early, as few properties are open in deep winter.
2. Allow extra days at the start and the end.
3. Ask your stay about road access after snow.
4. Carry warm clothing and medicines.

If you prefer an easier winter holiday, Shimla and Narkanda give snow with simpler roads.
