Most travel policies are written for ordinary trips. Winter Spiti is not one.
Read these parts of the policy
1. Hazardous activity and altitude clauses. Standard base policies generally exclude adventure sports and trekking unless you buy an add-on. Policy documents list activities they treat as hazardous.
2. Medical cover at altitude. Check whether a claim is excluded above a stated altitude.
3. Emergency evacuation. Check whether road or air evacuation is covered, and the limit.
4. Trip delay and cancellation. Check what happens if a road closes or the trip is cancelled for weather.
5. Pre-existing conditions. Many policies exclude or limit them.
6. Claim process. Know the helpline and the documents needed.
What to do
- Ask the insurer in writing whether Spiti or Lahaul and Spiti by road is covered in winter.
- Keep a printed copy of the policy.
- Share the helpline number with someone at home.
Insurance does not replace planning. A policy that covers a hospital bill does not solve a road closure, so keep spare days and a flexible flight.
