Winter Spiti is not a normal holiday, and starting from Bangalore adds a long first leg. Settle the route before the flights.
The usual winter pattern (not today's road status). Kunzum Pass (14,931 ft) sits on the Manali to Kaza road, and that route normally shuts for the winter months. In one past season the district disaster authority closed the Gramphu to Losar stretch from 25 November because of black ice and extreme cold. When that happens, Spiti is reached from the other side: Shimla, Kinnaur, then Spiti on NH5. This is why winter trips often start from Chandigarh or Delhi and take longer than summer ones. Closing and opening dates change every year, so ask your operator for the current status of each road before you book, and again before you leave.
Flights. There is no direct flight to Spiti. Bangalore to Delhi or Chandigarh works. Arrive the day before the road leg starts, and do not book a tight same-day connection.
Leave days. Count door to door, including your return flight, and add at least one spare day. Winter roads can stop vehicles for a day or more.
Ask your operator
- Which route they use, and what the plan is if it closes.
- Who the driver is and whether the vehicle is suited to snow and ice.
- What happens medically at altitude. Kaza is around 3,800 m and villages like Kibber are higher.
- Which stays are heated and what meals are included.
Mindset. Expect cold, limited services and itinerary changes. The trip rewards flexible travellers.
