Winter Spiti: 4x4 or Tempo Traveller? What the Price Difference Buys

An SUV in the high desert near a Himalayan peak

Winter Spiti roads can have snow, ice and loose gravel. The vehicle matters.

4x4 SUV
- Better traction on rough, slippery roads.
- Smaller, so it suits groups of up to four to six, depending on the model.
- Operators commonly add snow chains in winter.

Tempo traveller
- Roomier, with seats for larger groups.
- Less suited to steep, icy roads, and the driver must be experienced.
- More comfortable for long drives in good conditions.

Ask the operator
1. Which vehicle will you actually travel in?
2. Does it have snow chains or winter tyres?
3. How many winter trips has the driver done on this route?
4. What is the plan if the road is blocked?

Do not decide only by price. On this route, the vehicle and driver are a safety question.
