Himachal or Kashmir in Winter: Snow, Travel Time, Comfort and Budget

Snow meadows at Gulmarg, Kashmir

Access. Himachal is reached by road from Chandigarh or Delhi, or by flight to Chandigarh, Kullu or Dharamshala. Kashmir is reached by flight to Srinagar, or by the rail link, including Vande Bharat services on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla line.

Snow. Himachal has many accessible snow bases such as Shimla, Narkanda and Manali, with the best chances in January and February. Gulmarg in Kashmir is a well-known snow and ski destination, at about 2,650 m.

Flexibility. Himachal gives many choices of base and route, so you can change plans. Kashmir has fewer bases, and most visitors rely on taxis, with local union rules.

Comfort. Both are cold. Check heating and hot water.

Current notes. Check the status of specific places in Kashmir, since some, like Baisaran in Pahalgam, have been closed to visitors.

Choose Himachal for flexibility and shorter travel from the plains.
Choose Kashmir if Gulmarg and Srinagar are your priority and you are fine with a flight.
