Himachal in January: Snow Trips, Accessible Bases and Flexible Routes

January is one of the two most reliable snow months in Himachal. It is also the coldest.

Accessible bases. Shimla, Kufri, Narkanda, Chail, Manali, Dalhousie and Dharamshala remain open. Solang, Sissu and the Atal Tunnel north portal near Manali often see snow, and tourists have been diverted there when Rohtang closes.

Less accessible. Kunzum Pass and the Leh road are closed. Jalori Pass may be closed or open only briefly. In Kinnaur, heavy snow has closed link roads in past winters.

3. Check each road before you travel.

Fresh snow can slow traffic even on open roads.
