The right starting point depends on where you want to go first.
- Chandigarh: the usual gateway for Shimla, Narkanda, Kinnaur and also Manali. It is the closest big city to the hills and has an airport with flights from major cities.
- Delhi: the largest choice of flights and trains, and a good option if you are coming from far away. Plan an extra overnight or an early start, as the road to the hills is long.
- Amritsar: a natural start for Dharamshala and Dalhousie, and it lets you add the Golden Temple.
How to choose
1. List your first stop.
2. Compare the flight or train times to each gateway.
3. Compare the road time from each gateway to your first stop.
4. Leave time for traffic on the return day.
If your plan covers two regions, such as Shimla and Dharamshala, consider entering through one city and leaving through another, with a one-way vehicle.
